A lithium fire extinguisher uses a special extinguishing agent called Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD). When you use AVD, tiny vermiculite particles adhere to the burning substance. These particles form a protective layer over the fire. This layer dries quickly and blocks oxygen, isolating the fuel from the air. This helps to cool the fire. As the water in the AVD evaporates, the vermiculite particles accumulate and the fire is slowly brought under control.
Did you know that a burning lithium battery can reach temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius? The extinguishing agent works even better the more intense the fire becomes. This means that at higher temperatures and more intense fires, the AVD extinguishing agent more effectively extinguishes the flames and keeps the fire under control. It absorbs the heat and forms a protective layer, suffocating the fire and preventing further spread.
